Clear aligners are designed to be discreet. So when they start looking cloudy or slightly yellow, it can feel frustrating.
Coffee. Tea. Red wine. Curries. Even skipping a proper clean for a day or two can leave your aligners looking less than crystal clear. And because you’re wearing them up to 22 hours a day, aligner stains build up faster than you might expect.
The good news? Most aligner staining is preventable and manageable.
If your trays aren’t looking as fresh as they did on day one, here’s how to deal with stains and keep your aligners clear throughout treatment.
Top Tips to Prevent Aligner Stains
Aligner stains are one of the most common concerns during clear aligner treatment. Luckily, most staining is preventable with simple daily habits.
Here’s how to reduce the risk of aligner stains and keep your trays looking clear throughout treatment.
1. Rinse Every Time You Remove Them
Always rinse your aligners with lukewarm water whenever you take them out. This helps wash away saliva, food particles, and bacteria that can contribute to aligner stains and discolouration.
2. Avoid Coloured Drinks While Wearing Aligners
Tea, coffee, red wine, soft drinks and some juices can cause clear aligner stains if consumed while wearing them.
Stick to water while your aligners are in, and save other drinks for mealtimes when they’re safely removed.
3. Brush and Floss Before Reinserting
Food and plaque trapped against your teeth can transfer onto your aligners, increasing the chance of stains.
Brushing and flossing before putting your aligners back in helps minimise staining and keeps both your teeth and aligners cleaner.
4. Clean Your Aligners Properly
If you’re wondering how to remove aligner stains, proper cleaning is key.
Use a gentle, clear anti-bacterial soap or a designated aligner cleaning solution like Orthobrite tablets (available for purchase in-clinic!). Stay clear of toothpaste, as it can be abrasive and create tiny scratches where aligner stains can build up.
It’s important you also don’t use hot water, as this can warp the plastic.
For a deeper clean, many of our patients choose to use an ultrasonic cleaner. The GO2 Dentagenie Ultrasonic Cleaner is now available from all Urban Smile specialist aligner clinics for $80. It uses ultrasonic vibration and water to help remove buildup from aligners and retainers in just a few minutes.
It’s a simple way to support your daily cleaning routine, especially if you’re prone to aligner stains.
5. Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush
Gently brushing your aligners daily with a soft toothbrush helps remove buildup before it turns into visible aligner stains. Avoid scrubbing too hard, which can create surface scratches.
6. Store Them in Their Case
When not in use, always store your aligners in their case. Leaving them exposed increases the risk of bacteria buildup, odours, and discolouration.
🌟 Bonus Tip: Change Aligners on Schedule
Wearing each aligner only for the time prescribed by your Specialist Orthodontist can also help reduce noticeable aligner stains.
Trying to extend wear time beyond what’s recommended may increase wear and surface discolouration. Staying on schedule keeps your treatment progressing as planned.
Already Noticing Aligner Stains?
If you’re seeing stains or yellowing, soaking your aligners in a recommended cleaning solution such as Orthobrite cleaning tablets may help lift surface discolouration.
