Did you know? Your Dream Smile journey doesn’t end once your clear aligner treatment is complete. Getting a retainer fitted and wearing it consistently is key to maintaining that confident, straight smile.
To help you keep your retainer clean, clear and doing its job, here are 7 simple tips we recommend:
1. Wear Your Retainer as Directed
The most important step? Actually wearing it! Our team will give you personalised instructions for wearing your retainer/s based on your treatment and your individual smile. Whether it’s every night or a few times a week, sticking to the plan helps your teeth stay aligned. Teeth have memory, so they want to move back to where they started! Wearing your retainer as instructed helps making sure they stay aligned after your clear aligner journey is completed.
2. Clean Your Retainer Daily
Just like your teeth, your retainer needs daily cleaning. Rinse it with lukewarm soapy water after every use and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water as it can warp the plastic.

3. Use OrthoBrite Tablets for a Deeper Clean
At Urban Smile, we stock Orthobrite Cleaning Tablets which a convenient way to keep your retainers crystal clear and bacteria-free. Simply pop one tablet into a cup of water, let your retainer soak for 15 minutes, rinse with water and dry before your next wear. It’s that easy!
4. Avoid Harsh Cleaners or Toothpaste
Never use toothpaste or household cleaners like bleach on your retainer. These products are too abrasive and can damage the material, making it cloudy or uncomfortable to wear.
5. Keep Your Retainer in Its Case
If it’s not in your mouth, it should be in its case! Too many retainers end up in the bin, the washing machine, or worse, the dog’s mouth. A sturdy case helps prevent breakage, loss or germs.
6. Avoid Eating or Drinking with Your Retainer In
Food and sugary drinks can cause build-up and staining on your retainer. Always remove it before eating or drinking anything other than water. And if you forget, give it a quick rinse and brush as soon as you can.
7. Check In Regularly With Your Specialist Orthodontist
Even after treatment, it’s important to come in for regular retainer check-ups. We recommend replacing your retainer every 18 months to ensure it fits correctly and make any necessary adjustments, to ensure your teeth stay in place for the long haul.
