If you’re thinking about straightening your teeth with clear aligners, your first consultation is where everything begins. Whether you’re comparing treatment options or ready to take the next step, understanding what happens during the appointment can help you feel more confident before you visit one of our Melbourne studios.
Many people wonder whether they’ll need X-rays, how long the appointment takes or whether they’ll find out if they’re suitable for clear aligners.
At Urban Smile, your consultation is simply about understanding your smile and helping you make an informed decision. Whether you’re ready to begin treatment or just exploring your options, our team will guide you through every step and answer any questions you have along the way.
What happens at a clear aligner consultation?
During a clear aligner consultation, your teeth, bite and oral health are assessed to determine whether clear aligners may be a suitable treatment option. At Urban Smile, your appointment includes a discussion about your smile goals, digital photographs, X-rays, a comfortable 3D scan and an oral health assessment. Your clinical records are then reviewed by one of our Specialist Orthodontists, who designs your personalised treatment plan if clear aligners are appropriate.
Not sure whether clear aligners may be suitable for you? Here are some general signs that you could be a candidate for clear aligner treatment. A consultation is required to assess your suitability, and your Specialist Orthodontist will recommend the most appropriate treatment options based on your individual needs.
We start by understanding your smile, not just your teeth
Before we look at your teeth, we take the time to understand you. We’ll chat about what you’d like to improve, what’s prompted you to consider clear aligners and whether you’ve had orthodontic treatment before.
Every smile has a different story. Understanding your goals helps us recommend the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
This conversation is just as important as the clinical records we collect because every treatment recommendation is based on your individual needs and goals.

Building a complete picture of your oral health
The next part of your appointment is all about gathering information.
We’ll take a series of photos of your smile, X-rays and a 3D scan of your teeth. The scan replaces traditional impressions, creating a detailed digital model of your smile without messy moulds.
These records help us understand much more than whether your teeth are straight. They allow us to assess your bite, tooth position, jaw relationships and the overall health of your mouth.
An Oral Health Therapist will also examine your teeth and gums. If there’s anything that should be addressed before orthodontic treatment, such as active tooth decay or gum disease, we’ll explain why this is important and discuss the next steps. Beginning orthodontic treatment with healthy teeth and gums helps provide the best foundation for care.
Who designs your treatment plan?
One question we hear regularly is whether treatment is planned during the appointment.
The answer is yes, but not on the spot.
After your consultation, your clinical records are reviewed by one of Urban Smile’s Specialist Orthodontists, Dr Sarah Lawrence or Dr Igor Lavrin. They assess your photographs, X-rays, 3D scan and clinical findings before determining whether clear aligner treatment is appropriate and developing your personalised treatment plan.
Because every smile is different, treatment recommendations vary from person to person. Some patients may be suitable for clear aligners, while others may benefit from a different approach or require dental treatment before orthodontic care can begin.

Will I receive my treatment plan on the day?
In many cases, we’ll be able to discuss the likely treatment approach and answer your questions during your consultation.
Once your Specialist Orthodontist has completed their assessment, we’ll explain your recommended treatment, the estimated treatment duration, fees, payment options and what’s included in your care if you choose to proceed.
There is no obligation to begin treatment following your consultation. The appointment is designed to provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a clear aligner consultation take?
Your appointment usually takes around one hour, allowing enough time to complete your records, assess your oral health and discuss your options without feeling rushed.
Does the consultation hurt?
No. Digital photographs, X-rays and 3D scans are non-invasive and are generally well tolerated. If you have any concerns during your appointment, our team will talk you through each step.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required. You can book a consultation directly with Urban Smile.
Can everyone have clear aligners?
Not necessarily. Clear aligners are suitable for many people, but not every smile is the same. A consultation is needed to assess whether clear aligner treatment is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Your consultation is about making an informed decision
Booking a consultation doesn’t mean you’re committing to treatment.
It’s an opportunity to better understand your smile, learn about your options and receive a personalised assessment from a team whose treatment plans are designed by Specialist Orthodontists.
If you’re considering clear aligners and would like to know whether they’re suitable for you, booking a consultation is the best place to start.
