Replacement Retainers

Lost, damaged or need a new retainer? No worries, we’ve got you covered.

At Urban Smile, we offer dental retainers and removable retainers to help keep your smile beautifully aligned. Whether you have had clear aligner orthodontic treatment with us or somewhere else, you’re welcome to book in with our team.

Available at our Brunswick, Hawthorn and Waurn Ponds clinics.

Bonded Retainer

We also offer replacement or new bonded retainers and repair of bonded retainers. A bonded retainer is a thin wire attached behind the front teeth to help keep them aligned. Bonded retainers offer continuous support because they stay in place. They are especially helpful in areas where teeth are more likely to move, such as the lower front teeth. If you need some assistance with a bonded retainer, you’re welcome to book in with our team.

Available at our Brunswick, Hawthorn and Waurn Ponds clinics.

A replacement retainer is a new retainer made when your current retainer is lost, broken, worn out or no longer fits properly. At Urban Smile, we provide both removable retainers and bonded retainers, including bonded retainer re-glues, removals and replacements.

Need a Replacement or New Retainer?

Retainers are the quiet achievers of your orthodontic journey. They help keep your teeth aligned after braces or clear aligners, so all that hard work doesn’t start reverting.

If your retainer is cracked, loose, lost, worn down or simply not fitting the way it should, it’s best to replace it sooner rather than later. Teeth can shift more quickly than most people think, and the longer you leave it, the harder it can be to keep everything in place.

Not an existing Urban Smile patient? That’s totally fine. You do not need to have had treatment with us to book a retainer appointment.

Retainers in 3 Easy Steps

Step 1

Book an Appointment

At your appointment, our clinical team will assess your smile and take a 3D digital scan of your teeth. That means no old school impression kits and no fuss.

Step 2

Your Retainer is Made

We’ll use your scan to create a custom retainer designed for your smile. If you need a removable retainer, we’ll have it made to fit snugly and comfortably. If you need help with a bonded retainer, we’ll assess whether you need a re glue, removal or full replacement.

Step 3

Collect Your Retainer

Once your removable retainer is ready, you’ll collect it from your chosen Urban Smile studio. We’ll also give you simple guidance on wear and care, so you can keep your retainer safe and sound.

Removable Retainers

A removable retainer is a clear retainer that you can take in and out. It is designed to hold your teeth in position after orthodontic treatment and help maintain your results over time.

What is a removable retainer?

Removable retainers are a popular option because they are discreet, easy to clean and simple to wear. They are often worn at night, depending on your treatment plan and your orthodontist’s advice.

If you have lost your retainer, cracked it, warped it with heat, or noticed it no longer fits properly, it may be time for a replacement removable retainer.

When should you replace a removable retainer?

You may need a new removable retainer if:

  • your retainer is cracked or broken
  • it feels tight or no longer fits properly
  • it has become loose, cloudy or worn out
  • it has been lost
  • your teeth have started to shift

If your retainer no longer fits, do not force it. Book an appointment and let our team assess whether a replacement dental retainer is the right next step.

We recommended replacing your removable retainer every few years.

Bonded Retainers

A bonded retainer, sometimes called a fixed retainer or bonded wire retainer, is a thin wire attached behind the front teeth to help keep them straight.

What is a bonded retainer?

Bonded retainers offer continuous support because they stay in place. They are especially helpful in areas where teeth are more likely to move, such as the lower front teeth.

Because they are fixed behind the teeth, bonded retainers are discreet and do not rely on you remembering to wear them.

Bonded retainer repair, re-glue and replacement

If your bonded retainer feels loose, has lifted from one tooth, or has broken completely, it is important to get it checked promptly. A damaged bonded retainer may stop doing its job properly, and in some cases it can become uncomfortable or harder to keep clean.

At Urban Smile, we can assess whether you need:

  • a bonded retainer re-glue
  • bonded retainer removal
  • a brand new replacement bonded retainer

Regular dental check-ups can also help spot early signs of wear on your bonded retainer before they become a bigger issue.

Retainer Pricing & Health Insurance

The cost of a retainer depends on the type of retainer you need.

  • Single removable retainer $300, quote code 811
  • Double removable retainer $500, quote code 811 (per arch)
  • New bonded retainer $500, quote code 845

Check your health insurance, as you may be covered for contributions. Typically, entitlements renew annually with a lifetime maximum claimable amount.

What Happens if I Don't Wear My Retainer?

Retainers matter because teeth naturally like to move. If you stop wearing your retainer, or delay replacing a lost or broken retainer, your teeth may begin to shift back towards their old positions.

If it has been a while since you last wore your retainer, a simple replacement may not always be enough. In some cases, additional orthodontic treatment may be needed to re-align your teeth and smile.
