What Is the Refinement Phase?
The refinement phase is another series of additional clear aligner treatment used to make small finishing adjustments after you’ve completed your initial set of aligners.
By this stage, your teeth have already made significant progress. Refinements are designed to fine-tune the final details, helping your bite fit together comfortably and ensuring your smile reaches the best possible outcome.
Think of it as the finishing touches after renovating a house. The hard work is done, but a few final adjustments make all the difference.
Why Are Refinements So Common?
Although your treatment is carefully planned using advanced digital technology, every person’s teeth respond slightly differently.
As Dr Igor Lavrin often says,
“Biology doesn’t always follow technology.”
That means some teeth move a little faster, slower or differently than expected.
Rather than settling for a result that’s “close enough”, refinements allow your Specialist Orthodontist to make small adjustments based on how your teeth have actually responded.
Needing refinements doesn’t mean your treatment has failed or that you’ve done anything wrong. It’s simply part of delivering the best possible result.
What Happens at a Refinement Appointment?
Your refinement appointment is similar to the records taken at the start of treatment.
We’ll:
- assess your teeth and bite
- take a new 3D scan and new dental photos
- create a revised treatment plan based on your current tooth positions.
Once your refinement aligners are ready, you’ll continue treatment just as you have throughout your aligner journey.
Will I Need New Attachments?
Sometimes.
Depending on the movements required, your refinement appointment may include:
- removing some existing attachments
- placing new attachments
- leaving your current attachments exactly as they are.
Every treatment is customised, so your clinician will recommend what’s needed for your smile.
How Long Does the Refinement Phase Take?
Every smile is different, so the number of refinement aligners varies from patient to patient.
Many patients have fewer aligners in their refinement set than they did in their initial set, as refinements are typically focused on small finishing movements rather than starting treatment all over again.
Your Specialist Orthodontist will explain your updated treatment timeline once your refinement plan has been designed.
Do I Still Need to Wear My Aligners for 20 to 22 Hours a Day?
Yes.
Even during refinements, wearing your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day remains essential.
Consistent wear helps your teeth move as planned and reduces the likelihood of unnecessary delays.
You’ll also continue completing your regular Dental Monitoring scans so your Specialist Orthodontist can monitor your progress remotely.
Are Refinements Included in My Treatment?
Every Urban Smile treatment plan includes one refinement phase, as it’s a normal part of achieving the best possible result for your smile.
In some cases, your Specialist Orthodontist may recommend an additional refinement to make further adjustments. If this happens, your Patient Consultant and Oral Health Therapist will explain why it’s recommended, what’s involved and any associated costs before you decide how to proceed.
