If you’re wearing clear aligners, there’s one number you’ll hear a lot: 20–22 hours a day.
On paper, that sounds pretty straightforward. In real life, though, there are coffees, lunches out, long dinners, workdays, school runs and the occasional moment when your aligners are sitting in their case a little longer than planned.
So how much does wear time really matter?
For most treatment plans, your aligners need to be worn for around 20–22 hours each day, with time out for eating, drinking anything other than cool water and cleaning your teeth.
Here’s what that actually looks like day to day, and why keeping your wear time consistent can make a difference to how your treatment progresses.
Why Do I Need to Wear My Aligners for 20–22 Hours?
Clear aligners work by applying controlled forces to gradually move your teeth according to a planned sequence.
For this reason, wearing your aligners consistently is an important part of following your treatment plan. Most clear aligner protocols recommend approximately 20–22 hours of wear per day.
Your individual Specialist Orthodontist may provide different instructions depending on your treatment, so their advice should always take priority.
Think of your aligners as something you wear for most of the day, rather than something you only put in when you remember.
When Should I Take My Aligners Out?
You’ll generally remove your aligners when you:
- Eat meals or snacks
- Drink beverages other than water
- Brush and floss your teeth
- Clean your aligners
Once you’ve finished eating and cleaning your teeth, put your aligners back in.
For many people, this becomes an easy routine: take them out, eat, clean your teeth and put them straight back in.
You can continue wearing your aligners while working, exercising, commuting, sleeping and going about your normal day.

What Happens If I Don’t Wear My Aligners for 20–22 Hours?
Missing your recommended wear time occasionally doesn’t necessarily mean your treatment is off track.
The bigger concern is consistently wearing your aligners for fewer hours than prescribed. Less wear time may affect how well your teeth follow the planned sequence of movement.
The bigger concern is consistently wearing your aligners for fewer hours than prescribed. If you’re regularly struggling to reach your recommended wear time, speak with your treatment team so they can advise you based on your individual treatment plan.
What If I Forget to Put Them Back In?
It happens, particularly when you’re rushing back to work after lunch or heading out after dinner.
If you’ve forgotten for a short period, put your aligners back in as soon as practical and return to your usual routine.
If you’ve missed a significant amount of wear time, or this is happening regularly, let your treatment team know. They can advise you based on your individual treatment plan.
You should also avoid changing to your next aligner earlier than instructed simply to compensate for missed wear time.
Can I Wear My Aligners for Less Than 20 Hours?
It can be tempting to think, “If I wear them most of the time, is that close enough?” Especially when you see people online talking about shorter wear schedules.
There has been some research into this. A 2025 randomised clinical trial looked at adults with very mild crowding and compared wearing aligners for 12 hours a day with wearing them for 22 hours. The shorter schedule worked reasonably well for some measurements, but the 22-hour group performed better for lower front-tooth crowding. (1)
The important part is that this study looked at a very specific group of patients. It does not mean 12 hours is suitable for everyone, or that you should change your wear time based on something you have seen online.
Your orthodontist recommends a wear schedule based on your teeth, your treatment plan and the movements being planned. So if 20–22 hours is what you have been prescribed, that is the target to stick to.
Can I Sleep in My Clear Aligners?
Yes. You should generally wear your aligners while you sleep, as overnight wear makes up a large part of your recommended daily wear time.
Before bed, simply brush your teeth, clean your aligners as instructed and put them back in for the night.
How Can I Reach 20–22 Hours a Day?
The easiest approach is to make aligner wear part of your normal routine.
Keep your aligner case with you. This gives you somewhere safe to store your aligners when eating.
Put your aligners back in promptly. Try not to leave them out while you’re chatting after a meal or getting distracted with work.
Be mindful of long meals and drinks. If you’re enjoying a long lunch or dinner, remember that the time your aligners are out adds up.
Follow your treatment instructions. Our clinical team may give you specific instructions about wear time, aligner changes and monitoring.
What If My Aligner Feels Tight?
If you’ve had your aligners out for longer than recommended, you may notice that they feel tighter when you put them back in.
If an aligner doesn’t fit properly, isn’t seating as expected or feels significantly different, contact your treatment team for advice.
Don’t automatically move to the next aligner to make up for missed wear time. Our clinic team can determine the appropriate next step.
The Bottom Line
For most clear aligner treatment plans, 20–22 hours of wear per day is the general recommendation.
The key is consistency. Remove your aligners when you need to eat, drink something other than water or clean your teeth, then put them back in as soon as practical.
And remember, your prescribed treatment plan comes first. If you’re struggling to reach your recommended wear time, speak with our team rather than changing your routine yourself.
