It’s been a few months since I wrapped up my clear aligner treatment with Urban Smile, and I’ve been hanging on to my Pola Night at-home teeth whitening for the perfect moment. I’ll be honest: whitening the night before a big event isn’t the best idea. (Tried and tested). Your teeth can get a bit sensitive right after, whereas at-home kits work more slowly, and you need to avoid staining foods (who wants that at a wedding!) so, if someone wants a really noticeable boost, it’s better to start about a week out and go for 4–5 nights in a row.

The final step in my clear aligner journey
After completing my clear aligner treatment, I collected my new retainers from Urban Smile Hawthorn to keep my smile aligned and was also given a Pola Night kit. I was told by the team to start slow with short wear times at first, just to make sure my teeth weren’t too sensitive. Following their advice, I began with two-hour sessions a couple of nights in a row and had no issues at all.
The science behind the whitening
Pola Night uses a 10% carbamide peroxide formula, which is a slow-release whitening agent. It gradually breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea, making it safe for longer wear times (even overnight!). Most at-home whitening kits use between 10–22% carbamide peroxide, so this one sits at the gentler end, which is ideal if you’ve just finished orthodontic treatment.
Getting ready to whiten
Before applying the gel, I always brush and floss partly because it’s just good hygiene, but also because clean teeth help the whitening gel do its best work. Then, I dot small amounts of the gel into each tooth I can see in my smile line on my retainer (about one-third of a syringe per session, usually the front 6-8 teeth). I mostly focused on the front teeth, since those are the ones that will be seen in photos! The Urban Smile team told me not to worry about spreading it around because once the retainers go in, the gel naturally distributes across the teeth.
If any gel squeezes out, I can just wipe it off my gums with a tissue. Easy!

Lights out, glow on
After doing two shorter whitening sessions with no problems, I finally went for my first overnight one! I popped my retainers in, and while I could feel the gel at first, it wasn’t uncomfortable at all. I finished up my skincare routine and got ready for bed, feeling a little nervous what if it felt strange to sleep in them? But honestly, by the time I’d cleansed my face and climbed into bed, I barely noticed them.
The morning reveal
Honestly, I’m all about anything that works while I’m asleep… peak lazy-girl beauty. The whitening gel didn’t bother me at all, and I ended up sleeping perfectly fine while it did its thing.

After a quick brush, my smile is looking brighter than I expected—still natural, but with that “just-polished, can’t-stop-smiling” glow. Perfect timing for my bestie’s weddings today! Honestly, I’m so ready for all the photos, and yep… you might catch me rocking a bold lipstick just to make this smile pop even more.
