It’s that time of year again. End of financial year (EOFY) is here, and you might be wondering… Can I claim my clear aligner treatment on tax? Or maybe you’re just about to start and want to know if it could make a difference to your return. Let’s walk through it together in simple, smile-friendly terms.

So… can I claim clear aligners on tax?

The short answer? Not usually. Most clear aligner treatment is considered cosmetic, which means it doesn’t qualify for a tax deduction. The only exception is if the treatment is medically necessary and part of a broader health plan prescribed by your doctor or specialist.

That said, don’t count yourself out completely. There are still smart ways to save on your treatment and make the most of EOFY.

    What about private health insurance?

This is where things get exciting. If you have extras cover that includes orthodontics, your health fund might contribute anywhere from $500 to $2,500 towards your clear aligner treatment. The exact amount depends on your level of cover and whether your fund has annual or lifetime limits. Want to know how to maximise your benefits? Check out our guide!

And here’s the kicker. Most health funds reset their limits on July 1. If you start your treatment before EOFY, you could use this year’s benefits and then claim again after July when your new limits kick in.

Tip: Contact your fund to ask how much of your orthodontic benefit is left for this financial year. You might be able to double-dip across two financial years by timing your start date right.

Didn’t there used to be a tax offset for medical expenses?

Yes, there used to be something called the Net Medical Expenses Tax Offset. It allowed people to claim part of their out-of-pocket medical and dental expenses on tax, including orthodontics. But that offset was phased out in 2019, so unfortunately it’s no longer available. We still get asked about it a lot, so it’s worth clearing that up.

Self-employed? You might be an exception

If you’re self-employed and your appearance directly impacts your work – for example, if you’re a performer, public speaker, or content creator – you may be able to claim your clear aligners as a business expense.

Of course, this is a grey area. You’ll definitely want to speak to a tax professional to see if this applies to you. Everyone’s situation is different, and the ATO rules can get pretty specific.

    Keep your receipts close

Even if you’re not claiming on your tax return, it’s smart to keep your receipts for clear aligner treatment. If you’re claiming through a health fund, they’ll often ask for proof of payment. At Urban Smile, we can provide HICAPS receipts or invoices to help you keep everything organised.

Just reach out if you need us to resend anything. We’re happy to help.

What if I’m on a payment plan?

Great news! You can still claim through your health fund even if you’re paying your treatment off in instalments. Many of our patients use our flexible, interest-free payment plans and still receive rebates on each payment as it’s processed.

So there’s no need to pay everything upfront to take advantage of your insurance.
