Thinking about getting your teeth straightened with clear aligners but worried about what this will feel like? Have no fear! Read our top tips on what to expect and how to manage the new feeling of teeth straightening.

Clear aligners, like any orthodontic treatment, can cause some initial discomfort, especially during the initial stages or when switching to a new set of aligners. This is very normal and all part of the process of moving teeth to the right place (which does need a little pressure consistently to make your teeth move). As you would expect, some teeth are easier to move than others.

With this, the pain is typically mild and tends to subside within a few days as your mouth adjusts. Think of it as wearing in a new pair of runners or heels.

Here are five steps you can take to make clear aligners more comfortable during your treatment in achieving your dream smile:

  1. Use orthodontic wax: Orthodontic wax can be applied to the edges of your aligners to create a barrier between the aligner and your gums, reducing friction and irritation. Apply a small amount of wax to any areas causing discomfort, especially where the aligner may rub against the inside of your cheeks or lips.
  1. Take over-the-counter pain relief: If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol can help alleviate any initial soreness or pain. Always read the label and follow the recommended dosage instructions and consult with your orthodontist if you have any concerns.
  1. Stick to your schedule: Consistency is key when wearing clear aligners. Make sure you wear your aligners for 20-22 hours each day and switch to a new set of aligners as instructed though your Dental Monitoring app notifications by the Urban Smile clinical team. Following your treatment plan diligently, can help minimize discomfort and ensure effective results. This is all about creating new habits and your new smile will thank you for it.
  1. Maintain your oral hygiene: A must! Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential during clear aligner treatment. Brush and floss your teeth after meals and before reinserting your aligners to help prevent food particles from getting trapped and causing irritation. Keeping your aligners and teeth clean can also help reduce the risk of gum inflammation or infection, which can contribute to discomfort.
  1. Use a chewie: A chewie is a small cylindrical tool that we provide in your clear aligner set when you start treatment – they help ‘seat’ your aligners more securely and evenly on your teeth. Chewing on a chewie for a few minutes after inserting your aligners can help ensure a snug fit and reduce any discomfort associated with the pressure of the aligners shifting your teeth. Our team will show you how to use these before you head home with your personalised clear aligners.

When in treatment know you can always speak with an Urban Smile Oral Health Therapist through your Dental Monitoring app – they are on hand to support you through every step of your journey! It’s a complimentary tool we provide for the ultimate convenience to help make teeth straightening fit within your lifestyle.  On a beach in Bali? You can still chat with us
